Ashwagandha for Men: What the Research Shows
Ashwagandha (KSM-66) has accumulated some of the most consistent clinical trial data of any supplement for male health. While it’s commonly positioned as «just a stress supplement,» the evidence in men specifically covers testosterone, muscle mass, strength, sexual function, and fertility — making it one of the highest-value single supplements for men’s health.
Testosterone
A 2019 double-blind RCT (Ambiye et al.) in infertile men found KSM-66 at 675mg/day increased testosterone by 17% and LH (luteinizing hormone) by 34% over 90 days vs placebo. A 2015 study in resistance-trained men found KSM-66 supplementation resulted in 15% greater testosterone increases compared to placebo after 8 weeks of training. The mechanism: cortisol suppresses LH and testosterone production — ashwagandha reduces cortisol by 14–32% in RCTs, removing this suppression.
Muscle Mass and Strength
The 2015 Wankhede et al. study (57 male subjects) found that KSM-66 supplementation resulted in significantly greater gains in muscle size (bicep circumference: 8.6cm vs 5.3cm), strength (bench press: 46.9kg vs 26.4kg increase), and recovery vs placebo over 8 weeks of resistance training. Muscle-building effects are attributed to testosterone increases, cortisol reduction (cortisol is catabolic to muscle), and possible direct anabolic signaling.
Male Fertility
Multiple RCTs specifically in men with infertility show ashwagandha improves: sperm concentration (up to 167% increase in one study), sperm motility, sperm morphology, and semen volume. The mechanism involves reducing oxidative stress in reproductive tissue and elevating testosterone/LH signaling. For men with fertility concerns, ashwagandha is one of the better-evidenced natural interventions.
Cortisol and Stress Response
A 2019 RCT (Choudhary et al.) found KSM-66 (240mg/day Sensoril, or 600mg/day KSM-66) significantly reduced cortisol by 14–32%, reduced perceived stress scores, and improved sleep quality vs placebo over 60 days. Chronic cortisol elevation suppresses testosterone, impairs muscle recovery, increases body fat storage, and disrupts sleep — addressing it has cascading benefits for male health.
Cardiorespiratory Fitness
A 2021 RCT found KSM-66 (300mg twice daily) significantly improved VO2 max in elite cyclists over 8 weeks vs placebo — a rare supplement finding genuine athletic endurance benefits. This is consistent with ashwagandha’s role in mitochondrial biogenesis and reduced exercise-induced oxidative stress.
Recommended Protocol for Men
Dose: KSM-66 300mg twice daily (morning + evening) or 600mg morning. Use exclusively KSM-66 or Sensoril extract — not generic ashwagandha root powder. Timeline: Testosterone and strength benefits emerge at 6–8 weeks. Cortisol and stress reduction is felt within 2–4 weeks. Duration: Beneficial with continuous use; no tolerance develops.
