What Is Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a Southeast Asian medicinal plant whose root extract has been clinically studied for testosterone support, stress reduction, and male reproductive function. Unlike adaptogens that work indirectly through cortisol reduction, tongkat ali contains eurycomanone compounds that directly stimulate Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone and may increase LH (luteinizing hormone) pulsatility.

Clinical Evidence

Hypogonadism RCT (2012): 76 men with late-onset hypogonadism received 200mg Physta extract for 30 days. Testosterone levels normalized in 90% of subjects (vs 35.5% placebo). Significant improvements in erectile function, libido, and sperm motility.

Stress and cortisol (2013): 63 subjects (moderate stress) received 200mg tongkat ali or placebo for 4 weeks. Tongkat ali significantly reduced cortisol (−16%), increased testosterone (+37%), and improved mood and tension scores.

Resistance training (2003): 14 recreational athletes supplementing 100mg tongkat ali extract showed significantly greater gains in lean body mass and strength vs placebo over 5 weeks.

The Physta Extract Standard

Physta (MIT-standardized hot-water extract, 100:1 ratio) is the extract used in most clinical trials. Raw tongkat ali powder has inconsistent eurycomanone content and far weaker evidence. Always verify your product specifies Physta or LJ100 extract — these are the clinically validated forms. Generic «100:1 extract» without Physta or LJ100 designation is usually inferior.

Dosage

Effective dose: 200–400mg Physta extract daily (or 100mg LJ100). Typically taken in the morning. Effects on testosterone and libido build over 2–4 weeks. Cycling (5 days on, 2 off or 8 weeks on, 2 off) is sometimes recommended but not clearly required by clinical data.

Pros

  • Direct LH stimulation mechanism (different from adaptogens)
  • Strong clinical evidence in men with suboptimal testosterone
  • Also reduces cortisol — dual mechanism for testosterone support
  • Improves sperm parameters and sexual function in clinical trials
  • Physta extract is well-standardized and reproducible

Cons

  • Evidence primarily in men with low-normal or below-normal testosterone
  • Effects less pronounced in men with already-optimal testosterone
  • Physta-standardized products are more expensive
  • Some reports of restlessness or insomnia at high doses
  • Not appropriate for women or during pregnancy
