Tongkat Ali: The Most Underrated Testosterone Booster
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) has been used in traditional Southeast Asian medicine for centuries, but it’s only in the last decade that clinical research has validated its effects on testosterone, stress, and body composition.
Proven Benefits
Free testosterone increase: The most robust finding. A double-blind study using Physta® standardized extract (200mg/day) found a 37% increase in free testosterone and significant improvements in muscle strength vs placebo over 12 weeks. Another study found 44% increase in DHEA alongside testosterone elevation.
Cortisol reduction: A 2013 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found 200mg/day reduced cortisol by 16% and improved mood and cognitive performance in chronically stressed adults.
Male fertility: A study of 76 men with low fertility found tongkat ali supplementation for 3 months significantly improved semen quality, motility, and morphology in 90% of participants.
Athletic performance: Increases IGF-1 and reduces sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), freeing more testosterone. Athletes report improved recovery, power output, and lean mass gains.
The Extract Problem: Why Most Products Don’t Work
Only two extracts have clinical backing: Physta® (200:1 water extract, standardized to 0.8% eurycomanone) and LJ100® (100:1 extract). Generic «tongkat ali root powder» or undisclosed extracts have no clinical evidence. Always verify the extract type before buying.
Dosage Protocol
Physta® extract: 200–400mg/day with food. LJ100®: 100–200mg/day. Generic extracts: 400–600mg/day (results variable). Cycle: 5 days on, 2 days off, or 8 weeks on, 4 weeks off.
Side Effects
Tongkat ali is remarkably well-tolerated at clinical doses. Reported side effects include mild insomnia (take in the morning), increased aggression at very high doses, and potential DNA damage at extremely high doses in cell studies (not seen in human trials at normal doses). Not recommended during pregnancy or for those with hormone-sensitive cancers.
